Privacy policy

This policy covers the Daultala App for Android (shop.daultala.app) and this website. It says what we collect, why we collect it, who can see it, what the app asks your phone for, and how to get rid of all of it. It is written to be read rather than to be survived.

The short version

• You sign in with Google to use the app. We keep two things from it: your name and your email address.
• No photograph of you, ever. There are no pictures of people anywhere in the app.
• What you type into a listing is meant to be public. That is the point of the app.
• We do not sell anything about you, ever, to anybody. There is no advertising network in the app and nothing that follows you around other apps or websites.
• You can delete your account and your listings from inside the app, or ask us to do it.

What we collect

When you sign in

The app offers signing in with a Google account. What we keep from it is your name and your email address, and nothing else.

Not your picture: the app has no photographs of people in it at all, and your profile shows the first letter of your name on a coloured circle. We cannot see your password, your contacts, your Gmail, your Drive or anything else in your Google account.

What you put in a listing

A listing holds what you type into it: the name of the business, a short description, the street it is on, a contact number, whether that number is on WhatsApp, opening hours, and for a vehicle or a property the details of what is for sale. You choose every word of it, and you can change or delete it at any time.

When you buy a promotion

A promotion holds the picture you upload, the section you chose, the number or link it opens, and the plan you paid for. Payment itself is handled by Google Play. We are told that a payment succeeded. We never see or store your card, your bank details or your billing address.

While you use the app

We keep a small amount of technical information so the app works and so we can find faults: the version of the app, the general type of device, and, if you allow notifications, the token the phone uses to receive them. That token identifies the installation, not you.

There is no advertising network in the app, and nothing in it tracks you across other apps or websites.

When you contact us

If you message us on WhatsApp, we have that conversation and the number it came from, for as long as we need it to sort out what you asked about.

What the app asks your phone for

The whole list, and every one of them is refusable. Nothing here is asked for on the first launch: each is asked at the moment it is actually needed, so you know what you are agreeing to.

• Notifications. So we can tell you when a new promotion goes up in the town, and when something happens to a listing of yours. Android asks you once, the first time there is something to send. Say no and everything else in the app works exactly as before.
• Showing those notifications on the lock screen. A notification arrives on the lock screen like any other unless you tell the phone otherwise. You decide that per app in the phone settings, and you can have them silent, quiet, or hidden until the phone is unlocked.
• Waking the screen for a moment when one of those notifications arrives. That is the phone doing what it does with any notification, and it stops the moment you turn notifications off.
• One picture, when you choose one.Buying a promotion opens your phone's own picture chooser. We receive the single image you pick and nothing else: the app cannot see the rest of your gallery, and it never opens the camera.
• Vibration. For the small tap you feel when something is pressed or saved. There is a switch for it on your profile in the app.
• The internet. To fetch the listings and to send the one you post. The app also checks whether it has a connection, so it can say so instead of sitting there.
• Your phone's clock and time zone. Not a permission, but worth saying: that is how the app knows which shops are open right now. It is read from the phone and never sent to us.

It never asks for your location, your contacts, your camera, your microphone, your files, your call log, your messages, or the list of other apps on your phone, and it has no way to read any of them. It does not ask to be left out of battery saving, and it runs nothing in the background: when the app is closed, it is closed.

Why we collect it

• To show the listings and let people reach the businesses in them.
• To let you post a listing and prove later that it is yours.
• To run and show promotions that have been paid for.
• To send notifications you have agreed to. You can switch these off in the app or in the phone settings.
• To keep the app honest: to look into reports, remove listings that break the rules, and stop abuse.
• To meet legal, tax and accounting duties in Pakistan.

What we do with data from your Google account

Your name and your email address are used for one thing: to create your account, to recognise you when you come back, and to attach your listings to you. Your name is shown on your own profile inside the app. Your email address is not shown to other users.

We do not sell it. We do not use it to advertise to you, and we do not pass it to anybody for advertising. We do not use it to build a profile of you, and no human at our end reads it except where you have asked for help, where the law requires it, or where we have to look into abuse or a security problem. If we ever wanted to use it for something not described here, we would ask you first.

What other people can see

Everything in a listing is public inside the app, including the contact number you put on it. That is what the app is for. Do not put anything in a listing that you would not want the whole town to have, and never post somebody else's number.

Your email address and the details of your payments are never shown to other users.

Who else sees it

We do not sell personal information, and we never have. We share it only:

• with Google, for the three things Google does for this app: signing you in, taking payment for a promotion through Google Play, and delivering notifications to your phone. Each of those receives only what it needs for that job, and Google handles it under its own privacy policy;
• with the service providers who run the app for us, such as the company whose computers hold the listings, and only so that they can do that job for us;
• where the law requires it, or to protect somebody from harm or the app from fraud and abuse;
• if the app ever changes hands, with whoever takes it over, who would be bound by this policy.

Where it is kept

The listings and the accounts are held on computers rented from service providers, and those computers may be outside Pakistan. Wherever they are, this policy still applies to your information, and everything travels there over an encrypted connection.

Some things stay on your own phone rather than coming to us: your settings, and whatever you have typed into a form but not yet posted. Uninstalling the app removes those.

How long we keep it

• Your account and listings: while your account exists.
• A deleted listing: removed from the app at once, and cleared from our records within 30 days.
• A deleted account: the account and its listings are removed within 30 days of the request, and backups are overwritten within 90 days.
• Records of payments: kept for as long as tax and accounting law in Pakistan requires, even after an account is deleted. These hold what was bought and when, not your card details.
• A report of something harmful: kept long enough to deal with it, and to recognise somebody who does it again.

Keeping it safe

Everything travels over an encrypted connection, access to our records is limited to the people who need it, and we keep as little as the app can work with. No app or website can promise perfect security, and we do not. If something goes wrong that puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the authorities as quickly as we can, and say what we are doing about it.

What you can do

• Edit or delete any listing of yours, from inside the app.
• Delete your account and everything attached to it. See deleting your account.
• Turn notifications off, in the app or in the phone settings.
• Ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask for a copy of it, by messaging the number on the support page. We answer within 30 days.
• Complain: to us first, and to the authorities if we have not put it right.

Children

The app lists the businesses of one town. It is not directed at children, and it is not intended for anyone under 13. You must be 18 or older to post a listing or buy a promotion. If you believe a child has given us personal information, tell us and we will delete it.

This website

The pages on daultala.shop set no cookies, carry no advertising and run no analytics that identify you. There is nothing here to consent to. Our hosting provider keeps the ordinary server records of requests that every website keeps, to serve the pages and to stop attacks.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and anything important will be said inside the app as well. Carrying on using the app after a change means you accept it.
